Malaysia’s pepper industry supports more than 38,000 registered pepper growers nationwide. Commercial pepper cultivation is centred in Sarawak, Malaysia’s largest state on the island of Borneo, where distinctive tropical conditions contribute to the quality, authenticity and internationally recognised reputation of Sarawak Pepper.
Borneo, the world’s third-largest island, is home to one of the Earth’s oldest tropical rainforests. Sarawak’s fertile soil, abundant rainfall and equatorial climate provide ideal conditions for cultivating premium pepper, while generations of growers have developed the skills and knowledge that continue to define its quality.
Sarawak has long been internationally recognised for producing premium pepper distinguished by its characteristics, quality and heritage. Protected by Geographical Indication (GI) certification, Sarawak Pepper assures buyers of its authentic origin, consistent quality and reputation built over generations.
Supporting the growth of Malaysia’s pepper industry is the Malaysian Pepper Board, which works closely with growers, researchers, exporters and industry partners. MPB strengthens the industry through research and development, quality assurance, crop advisory services, market development and sustainable practices, helping to ensure Sarawak Pepper remains competitive in global markets.
According to Vincent Sawat, Director General of the Malaysian Pepper Board, the initiative reflects Malaysia’s commitment to sharing the story behind one of its most distinctive agricultural products.
“Sarawak Pepper represents more than its distinctive quality and flavour. It reflects the dedication of our growers, the richness of our land and the standards that define the Malaysian pepper industry.”
“Through this initiative, we aim to strengthen global recognition of Sarawak Pepper while highlighting the growers, heritage and commitment behind its reputation.”
From Sarawak to markets and kitchens around the world, Sarawak Pepper reflects Malaysia’s commitment to quality, sustainability and the continued development of a competitive pepper industry, one Malaysia is proud to share with the world.
